Going solo: nerve wrecking and exciting!

Going solo: nerve wrecking and exciting!

Hey everyone! I’m Benji, a 10-year-old boy in grade 4, and I am passionate about hip-hop dancing! Ever since I was three or four years old, I have loved showing my moves in front of an audience, whether it was a small group or a large crowd.

One memorable experience I had was in December 2022, when I danced on a cruise ship: I went to this party with my friend Stephanie when she encouraged me to step into the spotlight and show off my moves. Although I was initially nervous and hesitant, I decided to take the leap and shuffle all night long. By the end of the performance, the DJ even called me "the little cruiser"! It was an exciting experience that made me love dancing solo even more.

Dancing solo is a different experience compared to dancing in a crew, specially if I'm competing. It is thrilling, yes, but it also makes me quite nervous. As a soloist, I have to remember the entire choreography, maintain high energy levels, look at the audience, and think about my facial expressions. There's no hiding on the stage; it's just me and the music.

Before going on stage, I have a routine to help calm my nerves. While waiting at the side or behind the stage, I take deep breaths, say positive affirmations to myself, and mentally practice the routine. I also like praying because it helps me find focus and confidence.

This year, I had the incredible opportunity to compete in my first solo competition at Get The Beat. I participated in three categories: Rookie of the Year, Hip Hop, and Open All Styles. Months later, I represented my school in the Junior All Styles category at Dance X. Most recently, I took part in the Upgrade competition representing Kinetic Creative Studio. These three competitions challenged me with different routines and skill levels.

Dancing solo gives me a sense of freedom and energy and I feel like I truly rule the stage. Sometimes, during my performance, I like making some freestyle moves to add my personal touch.

With three more competitions on the horizon, I have been working hard to train and improve my skills. Balancing my body, maintaining technical precision, and dancing super clean are my main challenges, especially in the most difficult routine. But I'm determined to give it my all.

As I prepare for these upcoming competitions, I am excited to showcase my passion and have fun. I keep my fingers crossed for a top place finish. Keep supporting me on this incredible dance journey!
