Why I love dance battles

One of the biggest moments in my dance journey happened in 2023, when I entered my very first solo battle. It was a kids’ battle organised by Clarence Kent, and I had no idea how much that experience would change me. That battle made me fall in love with freestyle and battling.

I love that every battle round is different. There are no rehearsed routines, no second chances, and no one knows what song is coming next. It’s just you, the music, and your creativity in the moment. Every battle teaches me something new about musicality, confidence, and being myself.

The only problem is that there aren’t many battle events in Brisbane, especially for kids. Because of that, whenever organisers allow it, I enter adult battles. It can be intimidating dancing against older and more experienced dancers, but that’s exactly why I enjoy it. Every battle pushes me to improve.

2026 has been my busiest battle season so far. I’ve travelled to Sydney twice, battled at the Gold Coast, and competed at several events around Brisbane. Every city has a different vibe, different dancers, and different styles, which makes every experience exciting and helps me grow as a freestyle dancer.

One of my favourite experiences recently was the Boomtown Block Party, organised by Elements Collective. It was extra special because it was my very first team battle. I was lucky enough to be teamed with Patrick and Brooke—two incredible dancers whom I learned so much from. Sharing the floor with them was inspiring, and I picked up so many ideas just by watching how they approached each round.

The event was held outdoors at QPAC, which made the atmosphere unforgettable. We were surrounded by dancers, families and curious passers by who stopped to watch. The energy was amazing. Dancing in front of such a big crowd, with everyone cheering and enjoying the music, reminded me why I love hip hop culture so much.

For me, battles are about much more than winning. They’re about learning, connecting with other dancers, expressing yourself, and becoming more confident every time you step into the circle. Every battle—whether I win or lose—helps me become a better dancer.

I’m excited to keep entering more battles, meeting more dancers, and continuing to learn from every experience. This is only the beginning of my freestyle journey, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.
