Deborah Adefioye and Benji after class

From Burna Boy to Afrofusion: Finding My Rhythm

In October 2025, something big happened in Brisbane.

Burna Boy and his dancers came to Australia for their tour, and Brisbane was one of their stops. It was a quick visit—but for dancers like me, it turned into a massive opportunity, because while they were here, they held a special dance session at Mad Dance House with one of Burna Boy’s choreographers, Deborah Adefioye (@warrior_debz). I got to attend that class and, wow! I enjoyed it so much!

It was my first time dancing Afrofusion—a style full of energy, rhythm, and freedom. The vibe was unreal. So much happiness and expression… it didn’t feel like just a class, it felt like a celebration. I wasn’t just learning steps—I was feeling the music in a new way.

Felt like home

What made this class really special is that I felt connected to my roots.

My parents are from Venezuela, and in our history there is African influence. Long ago, African slaves were brought there, and they mixed with Indigenous and Spanish cultures. They brought rhythm, drums, movement, and dance as a way to express themselves—even during times of oppression.

So when I was dancing Afrofusion… it didn’t feel completely new.

It felt familiar.

Carrying on

After that experience, I knew I had to keep going.

Now I train every Wednesday in Afrofusion classes with Mel Rai at Mad Dance House.

This class is something else. It’s loud in the best way: The music hits hard. The movements are big. The energy is powerful. There’s also so much freedom. I can mix my freestyle with the choreography, push myself, and really express who I am as a dancer. Every session feels like pure hapiness.

Afrofusion reminds me dance is more than just moves. It’s culture, history and expression. Afrofusion showed me a new side of my dance journey, and helped me connect deeper with who I am.

What about you?

If you’re a dancer reading this, Try new styles, step out of your comfort zone. You never know what might inspire you—or what might already be inside you!

This is now part of my journey… and I’m only getting started.
